Removed the door panel and inspected the main green 16 pin mirror plug for corrosion as others reported this was an issue. I found corrosion on pins 1, 2, 3, and 4. The temp sensor uses pins 2 and 3, so I rewired both of those through a second volvo OEM 2 pin connector which I salvaged from a parts car. When I rewired it, it went back to working.

Smell is a sign of impurities in the airing system or more specifically on the evaporator. Drying the system keeps it healthy and fresh. 2006 V70R air conditioning has been warm (barely cool) for a while, so I figured I'd check the system pressures before refilling or topping it off. With engine off, Low side and high side were at 104 psi. Engine on and AC on, low side started at 104, and steadily dropped to 40 psi, when I turn off the AC.
I have a 2005 V50, the A.C. will not work when it is 80 -105 degrees, my internal gauge shows 41 degrees, and proceeds to spiral down to -4 degrees F. Then out of the clear blue, it starts working, and the temp climbs upto 41 degrees and then all of a sudden it is 88 degrees!
